Howard + Helmer views sustainability as an element that we have been integrating into our designs over the years and not as an “add-on” element of our design. Our teams work to identify opportunities for innovative and cost effective design solutions that increase the quality of the built environment and minimize the impact on the environment. Our expertise is wide ranging and includes knowledge in water use, waste management, energy efficiency, green material selection, site design, daylighting, efficient lighting, indoor air quality, mechanical systems and commissioning.
Our project teams use a variety of computer modeling methods and have LEED accredited designers to assist in determining which systems maximize building efficiency while minimizing initial construction costs. This can translate into added value to a project, by reducing the building energy consumption. In addition, factors such as durability, maintenance requirements, impact on indoor air quality, and energy efficiency are all considerations in the selection of building materials which will impact the maintenance costs over the life of the building. Our goal from project initiation to occupancy is to incorporate responsible environmental goals, energy efficiency, cost control, and long-term systems maintainability and sustainability.
Two of our staff members have received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council.
